Overtown in Focus: A Storytelling Walk

Join VC Miami for a guided walking experience curated by Key2MIA Tours. Every neighborhood has a story. Who gets to tell it—and what gets remembered? Join Video Consortium Miami for a guided walking experience curated by Key2MIA Tours, exploring Historic Overtown through art, archives, and the voices that shape its story. We’ll begin through the eyes of Overtown artist Purvis Young, whose work captured the people, movement, struggles, and everyday life of the neighborhood he called home. From there, we’ll explore Black Miami history and generations of entrepreneurship, entertainment, civic life, and creativity, alongside the forces of segregation and development that have shaped the community. Along the way, public art, historic landmarks, archival imagery, and contemporary community spaces will bring Overtown’s stories into focus. Together, we’ll consider how artists, photographers, journalists, filmmakers, and residents document a community—and how their choices shape the stories we inherit. Beginning in the Culmer/Overtown area, we’ll walk through historic cultural corridors and wrap up with local flavors and conversation. Food tastings from Tanya Jo’s Cheesesteaks (IG: @tanyajoscheesesteaks) are **included** with your ticket. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. Two tour time slots will be available 1. 12pm Tour 2. 2pm tour This event is made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.
