This is a Doors Open Milwaukee 2026 ticketed tour with the Milwaukee Preservation Alliance. Join us for a self-guided walking tour of the historic Milwaukee Soldiers Home campus. The Milwaukee Soldiers Home, on the grounds of the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center overlooking American Family Field, was built in 1867 as a place of healing for veterans returning from the Civil War. Since then, thousands of Wisconsin veterans have called it their safe haven. One of only 43 National Historic Landmarks in Wisconsin, the Soldiers Home contains some of the oldest and most historic buildings in the VA system. With your Doors Open ticket, you will be given a map to visit five stops around the historic campus. Though the tour is self-guided, we’ll have volunteers stationed at each stop who will share their expertise on the buildings. Ticket Information: Please note that you are signing up for a 90 minute window of time in which to visit the Soldiers Home. You may arrive at any time within your 90 minute reservation, but we ask that you please plan to depart when your reservation time expires. Notes for your Visit: The Milwaukee Soldiers Home is an active residence for our veterans. It is a place of rest and relaxation and we ask that you give the buildings and residents the respect they deserve. Please do not try to enter any buildings or peak through windows. Our volunteers will have pictures of what the buildings look like inside for your perusal. Please refrain from taking photos or videos of residents at the Soldiers Home. Please note this is an outside-only self-guided tour. No visitors will enter any building on the campus. Accessibility notes: Old Main is located on the top of a hill, and there are stairs or sloped pavement to visit some of the spots like the Ward Theater. Please use caution when visiting the different sites around campus.
