Impossible Flowers, Literal Imagination - Illustrating from Writing

An illustration workshop with children's book author, Zahra Marwan. Join us at Novelette Booksellers on Thursday, October 22nd at 7 pm when children's book author and artist Zahra Marwan joins us for an illustration workshop. With short and timed writing exercises, we'll create a visual composition that will feel like a dream, poetry, or memory, a literal representation of what we imagine. Open to all levels of experience, but please note this event is 16+! This is a ticketed event with limited spots, so please make sure to snag a ticket before we run out of spots! Once the attendee list is full we will start a wait list. Materials included with ticket price. About Zahra Marwan: Working as a traditional artist with watercolor and ink, Zahra creates work that reflects her cultural roots in Kuwait as well as her life now in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She loves poetry and independent cinema and how quiet and mysterious the night is. She is deeply fond of the sea. A 2026 Sendak Fellow, her debut picture book, Where Butterflies Fill the Sky, was published by Bloomsbury Books and named one of the New York Times / New York Public Library’s 10 Best Illustrated Books as well as NPR’s Best Books of 2022. The week before receiving the Dilys Evans Founders Award from the Society of Illustrators, she was honored with an award by the UN Human Rights Commission for creating art that brings visibility to statelessness, indigenous groups, and minority rights.
