About this event

A telescope night features hands-on activities and views through telescopes in Dyer.

Full description from organizer

Spend an evening exploring Dyer, enjoying hands-on activities and taking in views through our telescopes. The night sky is waiting at Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory! Take a closer look at the cosmos through telescopes stationed around the Observatory grounds and our historic Seyfert Telescope. Step inside the Observatory to explore exhibits, enjoy interactive activities and discover something new about the universe. Whether you're an astronomy enthusiast or simply curious about the night sky, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Telescope Night is a relaxed, open-house-style experience with no formal presentation. Guests are welcome to explore at their own pace during their reserved time slot. Telescope viewing depends on clear skies. If clouds or weather keep us from viewing the night sky, we still have a variety of different activites around the grounds for guests to enjoy! Before You Arrive • Please arrive during your ticketed entry time. • You do not need to bring a printed ticket. We will have a guest list at the gate. • Please be considerate of other guests while viewing through telescopes. Photos through the telescope may be attempted with the attendant’s permission after the viewing line has cleared. • If your plans change and you cannot attend, you may give your tickets to someone else or notify Dyer staff so they can be released to other guests. • Photography may take place during the event for Vanderbilt University and Dyer Observatory communications and promotional purposes. • Firearms and smoking are not permitted on Vanderbilt University property. • Pets are not permitted. Service animals are welcome. Help Us Give Back! This Telescope Night, we're coming together to support our neighbors through a food drive benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. Guests are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to help fight hunger in our community. Most-needed items include: • Peanut butter • Canned chicken and tuna • Canned fruits and vegetables • Soups and stews • Pasta • Cereal Across Middle and West Tennessee, 1 in 8 people experience food insecurity, including 1 in 6 children. Every donation helps Second Harvest provide food and support to our neighbors in need. Participation is optional, but every contribution makes a difference! Accessibility Dyer Observatory is located on a historic property with varying terrain and accessibility throughout the grounds. Accessible parking is available; please notify the gate attendant when you arrive if you have specific parking needs. Some experiences may require navigating stairs or uneven outdoor surfaces. If someone in your group has accessibility needs, please contact us in advance so we can help you plan your visit and identify available accommodations.
