Join the Community Workshop NOLA for an 8-week woodworking course led by artist Carrie Rasor. Participants learn to design and build their own tables, covering shop safety, tool use, joinery techniques, and finishing methods, culminating in a handmade table to take home.

Join us at the Community Workshop NOLA makerspace to learn basic woodworking skills and make a beautiful table of your own. In this 8 week workshop, you will learn how to design a table, purchase wood, use woodworking tools and equipment, and finishing techniques. You choose the design and dimensions of the table and purchase your own wood for your project, with the assistance of the instructor. At the end of the 6 weeks you will leave with a wealth of woodworking knowledge and a beautiful handmade table. This workshop takes place every Tuesday from 11am-2pm for 8 consecutive weeks. This is a beginner workshop. No woodworking experience required. **If you are interested in building a table with someone, couples tickets are available. Each couple makes one table. Woodworking 101: An Introduction to Tablemaking ( 8 weeks) Learning objectives: • Shop safety • Safety and proper use of tools (chop saw, jointer, planer, table saw, hand plane, orbital sander, pocket-hole jig, etc.) • Creating woodworking plans • Joinery techniques • Selecting lumber (characteristics of wood and considerations when selecting wood for your project) • Milling lumber (preparing lumber using the jointer and planer) • Glue-up of tabletop • Hand planning and sanding • Project assembly • finishing (stain and polyurethane) Class Outline Class #1: Shop Safety, Intro to Wood and Joinery, Drawing Up Plans, Making a Cutlist, Purchasing Lumber Class #2: Tool Safety and Use, Cutting and Milling Wood Class #3: Cutting and Milling Wood, Intro to Glue Ups Class #4: Guided Project Time C lass #5: Guided Project Time C lass #6: Guided Project Time C lass #7: Table Dry-Fitting and Assembly, Guided Project Time Class #8: Sanding and Finishing, Project Wrap Up Carrie Rasor is an artist and woodworker who is constantly exploring different mediums and materials to create with. She is passionate about teaching woodworking and creating a space for makers to learn and create. Carrie owns Community Workshop NOLA, a community makerspace located in the Bywater, as well as works part time with two nonprofits, Dykes With Drills and 1881 Institute to teach people woodworking skills.
