The enduring masterpiece of England’s greatest Baroque composer, Dido and Aeneas is a moving tragedy by Henry Purcell. The enduring masterpiece of England’s greatest Baroque composer, Dido and Aeneas is a moving tragedy by Henry Purcell based on Virgil’s Aeneid. The story follows Dido, Queen of Carthage, and her tragic love for Aeneas of Troy. In this production, dance and voice are inseparable: what cannot be sung is danced, and what cannot be danced is sung. Purcell’s sublime Baroque score comes alive in a landscape of movement and breath, building to one of opera’s most heartbreaking farewells.
