Environmental Justice Comic Workshop

Join Charlie La Greca Velasco and Rebecca Bratspies of Environmental Justice Chronicles in creating comics with a crucial message! Join Charlie La Greca Velasco and Rebecca Bratspies as they discuss The Environmental Justice Chronicles—comics with a crucial social justice message! The award-winning Environmental Justice Chronicles is a collaboration between Tulane's Oliver Houck Professor of Environmental Law Rebecca Bratspies and artist Charlie La Greca Velasco. These comic books introduce readers to the environmental justice challenges faced by urban communities and model strategies for community organizing to promote environmental justice. Charlie and Rebecca will also discuss The Earth Defenders, a graphic novella made in conjunction with the United Nations Environmental Programme. This work feature brave (fictionalized) characters taking action to defend the forest, the water, the land, or the air. These stories span the globe and are drawn from real life situations, highlighting how environmental defenders contribute to the realization of the internationally recognized human right to a healthy environment. This event is part lecture, and part workshop. Participants will help create a new storyline to raise awareness of environmental threats here in New Orleans. Come with your questions and leave inspired to become Earth Defenders. Come see how this interdisciplinary collaboration is effecting change for good!
