Full description from organizerShow less
Meet up at the Nanih to observe what’s in our waters, discuss cultural practices, and to build a water filter using off-the-shelf materials. Collection of Collections will guide participants in a special learning opportunity through which we build practical skills and community resilience. We will 1) observe with microscopes and learn about what’s in the water, in terms of common contaminants found in bodies of water in and around New Orleans, 2) discuss different cultural traditions and practices in relation to drinking water from around the world, and 3) collectively build a water filter using off-the-shelf materials and discussing real world applications and considerations. This event is capped at 15 participants – sign up today! Children are welcome to participate, with adult supervision. Participants will take home a copy of the Water Map, with a printed guide to creating a water filter using off-the-shelf materials, a timeline of New Orleans drinking water and sewerage history, and other water and public health resources. ____ Fall Equinox Program: This event is part of the fall equinox program that will be taking place at the Nanih Bvlbancha from 4 to 8 p.m. In addition to this workshop, there is a seed exchange, book launch for the Mississippi River Open School and Gulf South Open School, live broadcast by Bvlbancha Liberation Radio, activities relating to urban heat, and more! Image of filters at the SWBNO's Carrollton Water Purification Plant. The filter we will build is inspired in part by the filters that the SWBNO uses to create drinking water for the city.
