Sacred Ground

Panelists explore the roots of New Orleans music and how it continues to impact the world. Despite its size, New Orleans has exerted enormous influence, becoming a national and international powerhouse in the arts and music world. How did that happen? Author and band leader Jeff Klein is joined by Robert Wilfong, Martin Masakowski, Jake Gold, and Chuck Perkins to explore the answer, following the music from New Orleans through the Caribbean and South America and back to Africa. The conversation launches Rhythm Across Waters, Klein's three-book series beginning with Book 1, Sacred Ground, built on the idea that all of New Orleans is sacred ground, from Bulbancha and Congo Square to Second Lines across neighborhoods, Mardi Gras Indians on Super Sunday, and the massive festivals of the French Quarter, the Fair Grounds, and the Superdome. Come hear why New Orleans keeps shaping the sound of the world. Free and open to the public; donations gratefully accepted. Donations support One Book One New Orleans' year-round work. The Andre Cailloux Center for Performing Arts and Cultural Justice is accessible to community members who require mobility-related ADA accommodations. Parking near the venue is free, though somewhat limited. The nearest RTA stop is at N. Broad and Columbus.
