Full description from organizerShow less
Concert & Celebration followed by a Second Line to a screening of The Welcome Table, a critically important new film by Josh Fox. Released on HBO this past June, 'The Welcome Table' brought together climate refugees from around the world for meaningful, healing conversations at a table perched atop New Orleans' Bywater levee. The table then extended, bringing 750+ people together to celebrate, second line, and sing across a sprawling 1,000-foot table, an event that symbolized unity, strength, and togetherness in the context of a worsening climate crisis and heightened U.S. immigration restrictions. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Josh Fox crafted the film with the central idea that, as climate change forces millions of people out of their homes across the globe, we need to build more tables, not walls. On Sunday, October 25, we're bringing our table to the Lafitte Greenway as a symbol of joy, celebration, and solidarity with immigrant rights. Many climate, environmental, and cultural organizations will be at the table to welcome volunteers to their causes, and local food trucks will line the Greenway for attendees to grab their lunch or just a quick snack! Legendary New Orleans singer-songwriter John Boutté headlines the outdoor concert, joined by Grammy-nominated Mardi Gras Indian band The Rumble, Sabine McCalla, Anna Moss, and Amigos do Samba while food trucks line the Greenway with local cooking. When the concert ends, the music will continue as we second line to The Broadside Theater, where NEW ORLEANS FILM FESITVAL will screen THE WELCOME TABLE, followed by a Q&A with Josh and other people from the film. It will be a beautiful, fun celebration, bringing our landmark film back to where it all began, New Orleans! AGENDA: 1:00pm - Our event begins! 1:00-6:00pm - Enjoy our concert, support our array of local businesses selling food, and learn from the organizations and non-profits tabling.
