Taiwanese Hokkien, Hakka and Teochew Dialect Corner is here! 🍜 For most people, moving away means leaving home behind. For the Hakka, moving is simply carrying on the family legacy. And wherever Teochew people end up, they insist the kids must speak Teochew. This time, Accent Sisters’ Dialect Corner teams up with the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) to bring you four guests to talk about two dialects that have quietly conquered the diaspora. Together we’ll explore the tones and rhythms of dialect, peek into the past life of tofu, hear the family legend of a 36th-generation descendant of Zhou Dunyi, and follow a Teochew blogger’s stories of how Chaoshan people have put down roots around the world. Our four guests: Dennis Yueh-Yeh Li 李岳燁: Director, playwright, and certified club kid, usually found right in front of the DJ booth. Raised by his coal-miner grandfather. No one in his family knew how to pronounce "燁," so they simply called him “Hua” (華). His grandmother once scolded him for losing fluency in Taiwanese. Xiaorong Zhou 周晓蓉: 36th-generation descendant of Zhou Dunyi and Secretary-General of the Shantou Jinshan Middle School Alumni Association. Her ancestor loved the lotus that “rises from the mud unstained.” She loves trail running, and goes straight for the mud. Jieying Chen 陈洁莹: Founder of Chaoshan People in New York and a wild child who grew up along the Han River. She firmly believes every child must speak Teochew, and keeps kway teow and white congee on hand year-round for visiting fellow townspeople. Rosetta: Tech worker drifting between three Guangdong dialects. Loves Lin Shengxiang’s Meinong Hakka songs, and loves Eason Chan’s Cantonese songs even more. Her family’s ancestral hall was in Luoyang 3,000 years ago, and they still haven’t solved the settling-down problem. 📍 Saturday, November 14, 4–6 PM Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) 215 Centre Street, New York, NY 10013 🍻 After 6 PM, join us for an optional, self-paid dinner. Location TBD. Tag your 老乡 and come speak your hometown tongue with us! Written by Cynthia Chen Cynthia Chen is a writer in New York. Her first chapbook, Believing YoYo, is a series of unbelievable statements. She likes naming curbside plants and making unimportant decisions. Dennis Yueh-Yeh Li is a director and playwright, and also a club kid. Originally from Ruifang, Taiwan, he was raised by his grandfather, a coal miner. His maternal grandmother once shamed him for not continuing to speak Taiwanese. No one in his family knew how to pronounce “Yeh 燁” correctly, let alone in Taiwanese, so he was given the nickname “Hua 華” instead. Jieying Chen 陈洁莹 A Chaoshan blogger and founder of Chaoshan People in New York. Born in Dongfeng, Chao'an, Chaozhou, she was a wild child who loved roaming and playing along the Han River. Now living in New York, she constantly craves kway teow and rice congee, and firmly believes that every child must speak Teochew. Xiaorong Zhou 周晓蓉 A third-generation descendant of Zhou Dunyi, president of the Chaoshan Association, and a proud flag-bearer of the Shantou Jinshan Middle School Alumni Association. Her ancestor famously wrote about the lotus rising unstained from the mud in On the Love of the Lotus. She, however, prefers long-distance running and trail running, and seems to go out of her way to get herself covered in mud. Rosetta For most people, moving away means leaving home behind. For the Hakka, moving is simply carrying on a family tradition. Wherever they go, they remain guests, and moving to New York only proves that the tradition is alive and well. Working in tech, Rosetta moves between three Guangdong dialects. She loves Lin Shengxiang's Meinong Hakka songs, but loves Eason Chan's modern Cantonese pop even more.
