Afternoon-Perspective Simplified: Creating Depth & Drama in Urban Sketches

This workshop is hands-on, designed to make perspective easy, approachable, and practical for artists of all levels. Description: The morning session of this workshop sold out in 2 1/2 days. This afternoon session has been added. In this workshop, you'll learn the fundamentals of perspective through a few simple techniques which are easy to use when sketching on location. Together, we'll work through a scene step by step, building confidence and understanding as we go. We'll begin with quick thumbnail sketches to explore the key concepts and identify the underlying structure of the scene. From there, we'll develop a loose pencil sketch to establish perspective, composition, and scale. Once the foundation is in place, you'll have the freedom to complete your sketch in your own unique style. Whether you're new to perspective or looking for a straightforward way to improve your urban sketching, this workshop will provide practical tools you can immediately apply to your artwork. What you'll learn: • Simple, effective perspective techniques • How to use thumbnails to analyze and plan a scene • Establishing composition, scale, and spatial relationships • Building a confident pencil sketch framework • Adapting perspective principles to your personal style Come ready to draw, experiment, and discover how perspective can make your sketches stronger and more engaging. Materials: If you are already an urban sketcher, bring what you normally do when you go out sketching. The idea is to improve your sketching in your own style, so bring what you use. If that kit doesn’t already include a 12” ruler and a pencil, bring those also. If you are not an urban sketcher, the minimum you need to make the workshop the most effective would be: • A sketchpad, sketchbook, or loose paper. Size doesn’t matter too much, but I would suggest an 8 x10" size or larger. If you bring loose paper also bring a clipboard, art board or some other way of supporting the paper. Tables aren’t always available. • A 12” ruler • A pencil You can complete the entire drawing/workshop with just those supplies, but for more options I would suggest also bringing: • A waterproof fine liner, marker, or pen. • Your preferred medium to apply color, such as: - A set of watercolors and associated travel brushes, water cup, rags, etc. - Colored pencils and/or watercolor or water-soluble pencils. - Tombow, Copic, and/or Acrylic markers. - Any other medium you’d like, this is totally up to you. • A stool Legion Paper is a sponsor for this workshop. @legionpaper Where to meet: Meet the group in front of Eataly, at the intersection of 24th Street, Fifth Avenue, and Broadway, just to the west of Madison Square Park. About the Instructor: Charles Cannizzaro is a co-founder and Principal at CRATE Architecture, and a Registered Architect. With over 25 years of experience, he has guided some of the top national and international companies through successful projects with award-winning designs. Charles has taught design and drafting at Paier College of Art. He is also an avid Urban Sketcher.
