Anthropocene is a term often used to describe a new geological epoch in which humanity becomes a planetary force of change. It appears in scientific and social discourse, especially when referring to the accelerating geophysical and biochemical changes that characterize the 20th and 21st Centuries. The word stems from ancient Greek anthropos = human and kainós (cene) = new, characterizing an era when human activity rivals major natural forces. The Dutch atmospheric chemist and Nobel Laureate Paul Crutzen and American biologist and researcher Eugene Stoermer popularized the term in 2000 to highlight how humans have pushed Earth away from the stable conditions of prior periods, especially the Holocene that precedes the Anthropocene. In contrast to the Holocene (hólos=whole and kainós=new, and translates into wholly new), which started 11,700 years ago and has been a period of ecological balance and less extreme conditions for life on Earth, the Anthropocene refers to the planetary imbalance created by human influence on the planet, its life, and its atmosphere. The exhibition addresses, comments on, and evokes a delicate situation and the challenges and difficulties that stem from this new era of human impact and intervention on our planet and beyond.
