How we thrive: A 21st century public health agenda

By 2034, for the first time in the nation’s history, older adults will outnumber children — a crossover that will hold for decades, pulling our median age upwards through the rest of the 21st century. And yet, an older nation need not mean a nation in decline. Wild success looks like a society that has learned to harness its longevity: older, wiser, and generating more value than ever before. Meeting this moment requires a deliberate agenda: improve healthspan through prevention, diagnostics, and new therapeutics for age-related disease; reimagine care delivery for a majority-older population while supporting the next generation of providers; and rethink financial frameworks for coverage in light of increased longevity and a shrinking tax base.
