Ice Cream Social Justice: Can a Conversation Save Democracy?

Ice Cream Social Justice is a dessert salon built around the idea that dialogue and connection are the essential building blocks of democratic life. In a moment when conversations can quickly become polarized or shut down, the session creates a different kind of space: one where curiosity, connection, and ice cream can open up new ways of engaging with one another. For this Climate Week edition, conversations will focus on climate and environmental justice. Questions about who experiences climate impacts, who makes decisions, what communities owe one another, and what a just transition actually requires will become prompts for exchanges between people in the room. The ice cream is more than a treat. It acts as a “third thing”: something shared that can invite curiosity, create connections, and make difficult conversations feel more possible.  Ice cream will become part of the conversation, offering a playful and unexpected way into questions that can otherwise feel difficult to approach. Ice Cream Social Justice invites us to practice democracy together—one conversation, one connection, and one scoop at a time. What to expect A participatory dessert salon where eating ice cream and connecting through conversation are the main activities. Rather than listening to a series of speakers, guests will experience the Ice Cream Social Justice model themselves, using ice cream and prompts to spark conversations about climate, environmental justice, community, and democracy. The format invites curiosity and play, opening up new perspectives to discover what becomes possible through genuine exchange. Participants will also leave with skills and practice they can adapt for conversations in their own communities, workplaces, organizations, or around their kitchen tables.
