At the same time, the immense environmental and ecological damage caused not just by the accident, but by the cleanup and remediation of this vast military-industrial complex, remains largely underappreciated. Professor Norman Kleiman will draw on his multiple visits to Chornobyl to illuminate the disaster’s complex legacy. He will share research findings, stories, and images that explore: the effects of radiation on human health, the genetics of the free-ranging dogs of Chornobyl, the ocular health of mice living within the Exclusion Zone, and the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in the region. Dr. Kleiman is an Associate Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. His work integrates laboratory, animal, and human clinical studies to understand how environmental exposures—such as ionizing and ultraviolet radiation and heavy metals—affect health and complicate nuclear disaster response.
