Moving with a Changing Climate: Slow-Onset Events and Human Mobility

Hosted by Environmental Defense Fund and CARE Slow-onset climate impacts - such as sea-level rise, extreme heat, and desertification – are already reshaping where and how people live around the world. This event will highlight the growing evidence base on the links between slow-onset climate impacts and human mobility, drawing on EDF–CARE’s emerging research agenda alongside CARE’s experience in Somalia and other climate-vulnerable contexts. It will showcase how climate change is transforming livelihoods, local economies, food systems and mobility decisions, and how adaptation and resilience investments can strengthen people’s ability to remain where they choose, move safely when necessary, and recover with dignity. The event will also raise awareness of EDF and CARE’s collaboration as new work begins in Asia, helping to identify pathways for scaling evidence into programming, policy and advocacy, while building partnerships with donors, researchers and practitioners interested in climate mobility and (locally led) adaptation. The discussion will pay particular attention to gender-based and other differential vulnerability dynamics in mobility and climate change. This discussion comes at a moment of growing international momentum, following the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum and the endorsement of the Global Climate Mobility Principles, which emphasize the importance of enabling people to adapt in place where possible, and to move safely and with dignity when climate risks make mobility necessary.
