Paddle-In Movie: Gowanus Current

Join us for an on-the-water screening of Gowanus Current, a documentary by Jamie Courville and Chris Reynolds Join The Gowanus Dredgers for a very special screening of Gowanus Current, a documentary by Jamie Courville and Chris Reynolds, and join us for a discussion with the filmmakers at the Boathouse after the show. About the film: "Decades of industrial waste and raw sewage have turned Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal into one of the nation’s most toxic bodies of water. The arrival of a billion dollar EPA cleanup and a massive city-led rezoning herald a new era, but what's of value in a neighborhood, and who gets to decide? Shot over the course of ten years, Gowanus Current employs a strictly observational approach to examine the convictions of this diverse community and the textures of its landscape. As neighbors negotiate this top-down transformation, they reveal intentions far more nuanced and entangled than a NIMBY/YIMBY dichotomy. A portrait of activism and its limits, this is urgent civic cinema exploring the human side of the conflict engendered by a housing crisis, income inequality and a changing climate." What's happening? This screening takes place on the Gowanus Canal, below the 9th Street Bridge. Ticket holders meet at the Gowanus Dredgers Boathouse and paddle together to the site in the Gowanus Dredger fleet of canoes. We'll provide lifejackets, paddles, and a guided voyage to the on-water theater. After the show, we'll paddle back to the boathouse for a discussion and refreshments. Those wishing to paddle can reserve single tickets for up to three paddlers per boat. Solo paddlers will be paired with one other ticket holder. Weather may cancel. Photos by Nicole Vergalla
