Full description from organizer

About the session Walk into almost any meeting and you already know some of the rules. Where to sit. When to speak. Who gets interrupted. Whether disagreement is welcome. Who is expected to lead. How serious you are supposed to be. Whether it is acceptable to move, laugh, challenge the agenda, or admit that you do not know. Nobody necessarily wrote these rules. But they shape what happens in the room. Every group develops a culture, and over time its norms can become so familiar that they disappear from view. Some are useful. Others may quietly constrain participation, creativity, honesty, or the group's ability to change. And organizations trying to change the world are not immune. A team may talk about distributing power while its meetings reinforce hierarchy. A gathering designed to generate new ideas may follow formats that reward familiar voices. A community may value participation while maintaining unspoken rules about what kinds of participation are acceptable. What if we treated those norms as things we can design? This session starts from a simple proposition: we are not merely participants in group culture. We are continually creating it. That means culture can be changed through what happens in the room. Rather than discussing organizational culture in the abstract, participants will experience how norms emerge, become visible, and can be disrupted. Through movement, play, observation, and small acts of experimentation, the group will notice patterns it might normally take for granted and prototype alternatives in real time. What changes when people stand somewhere different? When status is temporarily disrupted? When the person who normally leads does not? When a familiar meeting convention disappears? When play gives people permission to behave differently? The exercises are deliberately small. The questions behind them are not. If we want institutions and systems to behave differently, where can we start practicing that change in the groups we already have influence over? What to expect This is an experiential workshop, not a conversation about culture from your chair. Participants will move through a series of short exercises designed to reveal the invisible norms operating in a group, disrupt familiar patterns, and experiment with alternative ways of being together. There will be movement. There will be play. There will be moments that may feel unfamiliar. The purpose is not novelty for its own sake. Each exercise will become a way of examining how culture is created through seemingly small choices about space, status, participation, facilitation, and behavior. Participants will then translate those experiences into practical techniques they can use in their own teams, organizations, communities, and gatherings. Who this is for This session is for people who lead teams, facilitate gatherings, organize communities, convene networks, or otherwise have influence over how groups operate. It will be particularly useful for people who sense that the culture they want and the culture their group actually practices are not always the same thing. What you will get out of it A way to identify group norms that have become so familiar they are difficult to see Practical experience using movement, play, space, and facilitation to interrupt established patterns Techniques for experimenting with culture without requiring a major organizational change process A stronger understanding of how status and influence affect who can successfully challenge group norms A practical methodology for asking not simply “What is our culture?” but “What kind of culture are we creating together?
