When Washington Comes Knocking: Federal Law & State Election Equities

A one-hour CLE on the intersection of federal criminal investigations and state election administration This election-law program will examine the intersection of federal criminal investigations and state election administration from multiple perspectives. Panelists will discuss the mechanics of state and county election administration; the process by which federal criminal investigations may intersect with that administration; the role of a Magistrate Judge generally in reviewing search warrant applications and other compulsory process; and how judges weigh the government's investigative interests alongside the interests of state election administrators and voters when assessing the breadth, scope, and reasonableness of such requests. The panel will address both the legal basis for federal investigative tools in this context and the practical safeguards available to protect election administration and voter confidence. A panel discussion and audience Q&A will follow. The State Bar of Arizona does not approve or accredit CLE activities for the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education requirement. This activity may qualify for up to 1.00 hours of CLE credit under the State Bar of Arizona MCLE requirements.
