Birding by Kayak: Exploring the Wakulla River

Paddle along the Wakulla River and spot some cool birds while enjoying a chill kayak adventure. Birding by Kayak: Exploring the Wakulla River Join Black in Marine Science for a guided Birding by Kayak experience along the spring-fed Wakulla River. Led by Dara M. Wilson, participants will spend the day exploring avian and aquatic life along the river. No prior birding experience is required, and a limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow. Prior kayak/canoe experience is encouraged. A limited number of tandem kayaks will also be available for individuals who would like to kayak together. Lunch will be provided as part of the excursion, though participants are welcome to bring their own food. Participants should bring a refillable water bottle, sun protection, insect repellent, weather-appropriate quick-drying clothing, and footwear that can get wet. Personal flotation devices will be provided and must be worn while paddling. Participants should be comfortable spending several hours outdoors in warm and potentially humid conditions. 8:00 AM – Participants meet at the FAMU pool. Participants will sign waivers; binoculars will be distributed. 8:45 AM – Depart FAMU using the two 15-passenger vans provided by BIMS. 9:15 AM – Arrive at Kayak Rentals TnT for check-in and equipment distribution. Dara conducts a 30-minute kayak review and lesson on bird sounds while Dr. Gerri handles logistics with Kayak TnT. 9:45 AM – Begin paddling on the Wakulla River. Launch from Kayak TnT and head upriver towards the Highway 98 bridge and boat ramp. 9:45 AM–12:00 PM – Kayaking and birding. 12:00 PM – Lunch at Highway 98 bridge and boat ramp. 12:30–1:30 PM – Return to the river and head downriver to complete the paddle. 1:30 PM – Return to Kayak TnT; return equipment. 1:45-2:00 PM – Depart for FAMU By 3:00 PM – Return to campus
