Space Telescopes: The New Golden Age of Astronomy

Join us at the Spanish Springs Library, Washoe Room, Thursday, September 24, 2026, 10:30 AM for this 90-minute presentation! Our popular James Webb Space Telescope presentation has now been completely updated, following the recent successful launch of the Nancy Grace Roman telescope, which is now enroute to LaGrange Point, some one million miles from Earth. But Webb and Roman are just two recent members of an entire fleet of fascinating space telescopes, from NASA and other nations’ space programs. In this 90-minute session, kids will learn: • the history and variety of telescopes, on land and in space • the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to visible light, to powerful gamma rays • why we put telescopes in space — in different regions • why we need very different types of telescopes to study the great variety of celestial bodies Interactive: Videos and live demonstrations add entertainment and interactivity to the show! Ages 8 to 16, as well as parents, can all take something away and be inspired to learn more.
