AfroFusion Flow Dance Class

Get ready to move, connect, and celebrate culture through dance! Join us for AfroFusion Flow class at the Petersburg Area Art League, an exciting new dance program that blends African dance traditions with contemporary Afrobeat, Amapiano, Caribbean, and diaspora-inspired movement. It is offered every 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. Whether you're a seasoned dancer or stepping onto the dance floor for the first time, this class is designed to be welcoming, energizing, and fun. Led by instructor Shelita, AfroFusion Flow offers more than just a workout—it’s a cultural experience that promotes wellness, self-expression, and community. Participants will learn dynamic dance movements while exploring the rhythms and traditions that connect people across Africa and the global African diaspora. No prior dance experience is necessary. Just bring comfortable clothing, water, and a willingness to move. Come discover the rhythm, build community, and experience the joy of AfroFusion Flow. The program director and instructor is Shelita Augustus. Shelita is a dance extraordinaire from Danville, VA, and a member 20-year-old Kuumba West African Dance Company, founded and run by her mother, Patricia Hall. She has been immersed in West African dance and culture since the age of four, mastering both dancing and drumming. Over the past 20+ years, Shelita has performed across the East Coast, attended numerous conferences across the United States, and choreographed for several West African dance organizations throughout the state of Virginia. A highlight of her journey was the opportunity to travel to Guinea, West Africa, to study under Mouminatou Camara, a world-renowned Guinean dance instructor. Shelita hopes to use the dance of the African Diaspora as more than just choreography; she aims to teach in a way that inspires a true appreciation for the culture, history, and movement. Valuing community above all, she welcomes everyone regardless of race and uses dance as a powerful means to bring people together. Inherited from her mother, Shelita has just one rule for her dance classes: to have fun and teaches by her mother’s favorite quote: "Positive Energy makes Life Worth Living."
