Accessible, relaxed fall migration birding / Excursión accesible y relajada de observación de aves migratorias de otoño accessible fall migration bird outing at Ankeny Hill Nature Center saturday, october 10, 2026 | 9:30–10:30am Ankeny Hill Nature Center, 130 Ankeny Hill Road SE, Jefferson, OR 97352 free | registration required | limited to 20 participants join Rey Snyder and friends from Feminist Bird Club PDX along with park rangers at Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge for a relaxed morning of birding together during Fall World Migratory Bird Day / Día Mundial de las Aves Migratorias at Ankeny Hill Nature Center. we'll take our time looking and listening for birds, noticing fall migration, and sharing what we see, hear, and wonder about along the way. no previous birding experience or knowledge is needed—curiosity is plenty! this outing is planned with disabled birders and people with access needs that are often unmet in nature programs in mind, including people who use mobility devices, experience pain or fatigue, are neurodivergent, or simply benefit from a slower pace, frequent stops, places to sit, detailed information about what to expect, or a smaller group. you don't need to identify as disabled or have a particular access need to join us. birders of all ages and experience levels are welcome. young birders should attend with an adult who can support them throughout the outing. binoculars and spotting scopes will be available to borrow at no cost. what to expect we'll meet at the Ankeny Hill Nature Center welcome sign, close to the restrooms and accessible parking spaces. meeting location on Google Maps we'll begin with a brief welcome and introductions, with time to get settled and comfortable before we start birding together. park rangers will also share a little about Ankeny Hill Nature Center and the land and refuge around us. a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service park ranger will stay with our group throughout the outing, with support and bird information available in both English and Spanish. our plan is to keep this outing close to the Nature Center and explore the Little Loop and surrounding area. this short route gives us access to several different habitats and places to watch birds without needing to travel very far. we may spend time around the pollinator garden and hummingbird feeders, look and listen for songbirds in the trees, and scan the open prairie for birds such as Western Meadowlarks and raptors. from the Nature Center area, we may also be able to spot herons, egrets, Northern Harriers, geese, and other birds moving through the surrounding refuge. a bird-banding station will also offer interactive education nearby as part of the larger World Migratory Bird Day event. bird-banding stations typically allow trained researchers to safely capture, band, and release wild birds to study their health, populations, and movements. this educational station will demonstrate the process using plush birds rather than live ones. participants are welcome to visit this station before or after the outing. we'll move at a relaxed pace and stop frequently to look and listen. there is no minimum distance you need to travel to participate in this outing, and covering distance is not the goal. the guided outing will last approximately one hour. you're welcome to leave early if needed or stay afterward to enjoy the refuge and the larger event. route + trail information our planned route will stay primarily around the Nature Center and Little Loop, which is approximately 0.12 mile. the trail is flat and approximately 60 inches wide, with a surface of hard-packed stone. the trail was designed to meet ADA standards. refuge staff report that the surface generally remains firm in rainy weather and that significant puddling has not typically been an issue along the route. there are benches and other places to sit around the Nature Center area. at the Oak Overlook, bricks arranged in a circle represent the growth rings of an oak tree and share some of the history of this place. stools and benches provide places to sit while birding, and we'll be able to set up a spotting scope there. the area is mostly open and exposed to sun, rain, glare, and wind. a canopy may be available during the event, and the Nature Center provides an indoor space nearby if you need to get out of the weather. if conditions and the access needs and interests of our group make it a good fit, we may have the option of traveling farther toward the David B. Marshall Outdoor Classroom at Peregrine Marsh, approximately ½ mile from the Nature Center (1 mile round trip). this would be an optional extension and is not required to participate fully in the outing. mobility devices are welcome, including wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walkers, rollators, and canes. you are welcome to sit, stand, change positions, take breaks, eat or drink, step away from the group, or leave early. there is no expectation that everyone participate in the same way or travel the same distance. parking + bathrooms there are two van-accessible disabled parking spaces near our meeting location in the paved parking lot of 15 spaces total. the bathrooms and welcome area are directly in front of these spaces. two gender-neutral, ADA-compliant restrooms are located at Gehlar Hall near our meeting location. sensory information this outing takes place during Fall World Migratory Bird Day / Día Mundial de las Aves Migratorias, a larger event at Ankeny Hill Nature Center with families, birders, partner organizations, activities, demonstrations, and a bird-banding station, which may add auditory and visual stimulation to the outing that would otherwise be absent. organizers expect approximately 50–80 people throughout the entire larger event, although we don't expect all 50–80 people to be present in the same area at the same time. our birding group will be limited to 20 participants. the Nature Center and trails are generally calm and peaceful. some road noise may be audible, but there is not typically significant traffic or airplane noise. the open prairie can sometimes be windy, although significant wind isn’t typical this time of year. depending on the weather, there may also be bright sun and glare. please check the weather forecast for Jefferson, OR prior to the event. if you need a quieter place or sensory break, there is a reading nook inside the Nature Center, as well as benches and picnic tables outside where you can spend time away from the group. insects are not typically a significant issue at Ankeny Hill this time of year, although you may encounter some while we're outside. earplugs, headphones, sunglasses, communication devices, fidgets, and other sensory or communication tools are welcome. there is no expectation that participants remain silent while birding. what to bring bring binoculars if you have them, but loaner binoculars, monoculars, and spotting scopes will be available at no cost. equipment available from the refuge includes six pairs of Vortex binoculars and six Vortex monoculars, along with several spotting scopes. at least one spotting scope will be set up at a lower height for use from a seated position. bring whatever you need to comfortably spend time outdoors, including mobility devices, portable seating, sensory aids, adaptive or medical equipment, water, snacks, and weather protection. service animals are welcome. pets and emotional support animals are not permitted. weather October weather at Ankeny Hill can vary considerably, so come prepared for cool or rainy weather as well as possible sun. layers can help keep you comfortable in changing weather. a brimmed hat can help keep the rain off your binoculars and/or the sun off your face. our planned route around the Nature Center is mostly exposed to the weather and may experience sun, glare, rain, or wind.
