About this event
At KubeCon Salt Lake City, a hands-on platform engineering workshop teaches attendees to build a small managed Kubernetes service on their laptops. Participants learn how hosted control planes operate, the network paths involved, and operational challenges like upgrades and noisy tenants.
Full description from organizerShow less
EKS, GKE and AKS don't run your control plane on VMs you can see. They run it as pods in someone else's cluster. In this hands-on platform engineering workshop at KubeCon Salt Lake City, you'll build a small managed Kubernetes service on your laptop: a management cluster hosting tenant control planes, workers joining from outside, and the network plumbing between them. Then you'll break it, upgrade it, and see what providers solve to run thousands. What you'll learn How a hosted control plane works: apiserver, controller-manager and scheduler as pods in a management cluster, a datastore that doesn't have to be etcd, and a tenant cluster that is "up" with zero nodes. The three network paths that make or break it: node to apiserver, apiserver to kubelet (why kubectl logs fails until konnectivity is in place), and pod to kubernetes.default. Operating it: what keeps running when every apiserver pod dies, how a noisy tenant hurts its neighbours on a shared datastore, and how to upgrade a control plane while workers keep serving. Your hosts Bring your laptop. This is a hands-on session with limited seats, so register early to save your spot.
