Full description from organizer

Beethoven in Context: A Legacy in Conversation Two hundred years after the death of Ludwig van Beethoven, his music remains as vital, challenging, and inspiring as ever. But no great artist creates in isolation. Our 26-27 season celebrates Beethoven by exploring the rich musical dialogue that shaped him and the generations of composers who, in turn, found inspiration in his extraordinary achievements. Our exploration begins with the masters who defined Beethoven’s musical world. The wit and elegance of Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the craft of Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and Johann Nepomuk Hummel, and the music of Beethoven’s student Ferdinand Ries reveal the artistic environment from which one of history’s most influential composers emerged. From there, we turn to Beethoven himself. His complete sonatas for cello and piano chart a remarkable artistic evolution, while his early string quartets reveal a composer mastering inherited forms before boldly reshaping them into something entirely his own. Chamber arrangements of larger works remind us that Beethoven’s musical vision transcended ensemble size, bringing symphonic breadth into the intimate world of chamber music. The season concludes by tracing Beethoven’s enduring influence on later generations. Sally Beamish, John Corigliano, and Béla Bartók each engage with Beethoven in distinctive ways, demonstrating how his ideas continued to evolve long after his lifetime. Across six concerts, Beethoven in Context offers more than a retrospective. It is an invitation to hear the past and present in conversation—to discover how musical ideas are inherited, transformed, and reimagined across centuries, and why Beethoven’s voice continues to inspire composers and audiences alike.
