Join us for an open, conversational Dementia Q&A designed for families and caregivers navigating the challenges of dementia care. Our panel brings together four local professionals who support individuals living with dementia from different angles — nursing, behavioral health, legal planning, and care management. Mandi Gales, LVN — Director of Nursing, Arden Courts Mandi brings the day-to-day clinical and caregiving perspective. She can speak to changes families may notice as dementia progresses, including behavior changes, safety concerns, personal care needs, redirection techniques, communication challenges, and what families can expect when care needs begin to increase. Courtney Aguilar, MSN, APRN, PMHNP — Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, ACERA Behavioral Health Courtney will provide the behavioral health and medication perspective. She can address common concerns related to anxiety, depression, agitation, sleep changes, hallucinations, mood and personality changes, medications, and when a behavioral health evaluation may be helpful. Shekinah Hammonds Davis — Managing Attorney, Hammonds Davis Law Shekinah will help families understand the legal considerations that often come with a dementia diagnosis. Topics may include powers of attorney, advance planning, guardianship, decision-making authority, protecting a loved one’s interests, and why it is important to address certain legal matters before a crisis occurs. Byron Cordes, LCSW, C-ASWCM, CMC — President / Certified Aging Life Care Manager, Sage Care Management Byron brings the care-navigation and family-support perspective. He can help families think through care options, coordinate services, understand when additional support may be needed, navigate transitions from home to higher levels of care, and work through difficult family decisions surrounding a loved one’s changing needs. Questions may cover topics such as behavior and communication changes, medications and symptoms, safety, legal planning, home care versus memory care, caregiver stress, family dynamics, and planning for what comes next.
