Join Women+ in Green SD and the Living Future Committee for a tour of the first project certified under the Living Building Challenge 4.0! Join Women+ in Green San Diego and the Living Future Committee for a tour of the first project in the world certified under the Living Building Challenge 4.0! This tour will take place at Miller Hull’s San Diego Studio, which is a 4,600 sf tenant improvement at the Point Loma Marina that earned Living Building Challenge Petal Certification in six petals: Place, Energy, Health & Happiness, Materials, Equity, and Beauty. This building was also Miller Hull’s very first San Diego project, designed by the late founding partner Robert Hull. This event will cover how the studio reached Net Zero Energy with a rooftop solar array and batteries, how their operable windows bring daylight and fresh air to nearly every desk, and how the team screened out Red List chemicals in favor of regional, sustainable materials. We’ll wrap up with a networking session, during which light refreshments will be provided. Parking: Paid parking is available on-site, and free street parking is available nearby. Cost of Attendance: • $10 for Students • $20 for USGBC-CA Members (sign in to the new Community Commons to access the member codes here) • $30 for Non-Members Register early—space is limited! About the Miller Hull Point Loma Office | San Diego, California The Miller Hull Partnership earned Living Building Challenge Petal Certification for the renovation of its San Diego studio. In 2018, the studio moved into a larger space at The Wharf at Point Loma Marina and it became the first project certified under Living Building Challenge 4.0, carrying on their mission of visionary building goals. The design team built on lessons from the firm’s Seattle studio renovation, which earned Petal certification for Place, Materials, Equity, and Beauty in 2017. San Diego pursued those same four Petals and added two more: • Health & Happiness: Manually operated, full-height windows bring daylight and fresh outside air to almost every part of the space. • Energy: With the landlord’s cooperation, the team installed a 24 kW rooftop solar array and a battery backup system so the studio could reach Net Zero Energy. The studio achieved Petal certification in May 2020 and now all of Miller Hull’s offices are Petal certified. Oriented toward the views of San Diego Bay, the studio offers a collaborative, open setting that engages and inspires staff and visitors alike. About Women+ in Green SD: Women+ in Green San Diego is a platform for quarterly events designed to strengthen the message of equality and empower people of marginalized genders in the green building and sustainability sectors. Event topics range from leadership to self-development and understanding equality gaps in the green building sector. This committee was inspired by the national movement and Women in Green conversations taking place in USGBC communities around the country. In San Diego, the committee is led by our volunteers and local leaders in the green building movement. Women + in Green is a safe space. We create inclusive and warm environments for our community. We welcome people of all gender identities and expressions at our events. Please note that while many of our educational events center on women's experiences, our goal is to hold conversations for all people who have experienced misogyny.
