Tidepool Exploration with WILDCOAST

Explore the vibrant intertidal zone of the San Diego Scripps Coastal State Marine Conservation Area, one of San Diego's 11 Marine Protected Areas. Together with WILDCOAST’s Tidepool Ambassadors, you'll discover intertidal wildlife, practice proper tidepooling etiquette, and learn how to protect these delicate ecosystems. We are honored to be joined by Tribal Sacred Waters, who will share their deep Indigenous history, cultural heritage, and ongoing connection to these coastal waters. Essential Event Details Location: Scripps Pier Gate (San Diego Scripps Coastal SMCA) Start Time: 1:00 PM (Duration: ~3 hours) Capacity: Limited to 40 participants RSVP Courtesy: Space is tight! If your plans change, please update your RSVP immediately so someone on the waitlist can join. What to Bring & How to Prepare Footwear (Required): Sturdy, closed-toe shoes with strong grip that can get wet or muddy (e.g., water shoes, old sneakers, neoprene booties). Rocks are extremely slippery and sharp. Mobility Note: We will be walking continuously for nearly 3 hours across ~1 mile of uneven terrain. Please reflect on your comfort level before signing up. (If you prefer a stationary experience, check out the other engaging San Diego Climate Week events!) Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. Layers: Coastal weather shifts quickly, bring a windbreaker or light jacket. Hydration & Fuel: Reusable water bottle and small, light snacks. Parking & Logistics Warning Arrive Early: Parking near Scripps Pier is notoriously limited. Carpooling is highly recommended. Check Time Limits: Many nearby spots are restricted to 1–2 hours, but this event lasts 3 hours. Please budget extra time to find unlimited or paid long-term parking. Late Arrivals: If you arrive after 1:20 PM and the group has already left the gate, head down the ramp to the beach and walk north along the shoreline to catch up with us as we head toward the tidepools. Look for staff in WILDCOAST shirts and/or for the WILDCOAST pop up tent.
