Anna Malaika Tubbs and Savala Nolan are leading Black feminist public intellectuals of our time. Anna Malaika Tubbs wrote a book about how the mothers of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. and James Baldwin shaped their activism. And then she wrote another book teaching women what American patriarchy hid from us, so that we would be able to see it and break free. Savala Nolan wrote a book, Don’t Let It Get You Down, about living in between race, body, class and being told not to let any of it get to you. Her new one, Good Woman: A Reckoning, is about rejecting being “a good woman” and what became available to her when she stopped. Ms. Magazine named it a Most Anticipated Feminist Book of 2026. She holds a PhD in sociology from Cambridge and tells the previously hidden stories of women who built American history. She is Executive Director of the Thelton E. Henderson Center for Social Justice at UC Berkeley Law, and her writing has appeared in Vogue, the New York Times, Harper's, Time, Essence and more.
