We’ll explore how asylums emerged, evolved, and shaped society’s understanding of mental illness—from early promises of refuge and treatment to the profound failures and harms many residents experienced. Tobias will discuss the social, medical, and political forces behind institutional care, the movement toward deinstitutionalization, and how these shifts influence modern approaches, from inpatient psychiatry to community-based services. Drawing on his work at UCSF and his experience across inpatient psychiatry, crisis services, residential treatment, and outpatient care, Tobias will connect history to present-day practice.
