Midweek Musical Matinee: "Exile to Hollywood"

Midweek Musical Matinee: "Exile to Hollywood" Wednesday, October 14 1:00pm In-Person at the Osher Marin JCC, 200 N. San Pedro Road (San Rafael, CA) At the beginning of the 20th century, the rise of anti-Semitism in totalitarian regimes in Europe forced an entire Jewish population into exile. Several waves of immigration emerged between the First and Second World Wars. During this period, many composers of European Jewish origin escaped the pogroms, the rise of Nazism, and persecution by settling in the United States, the new promised land. Austrians Max Steiner & Erich Wolfgang Korngold, German Franz Waxman, Hungarian Miklós Rózsa, Polish Bronisłav Kaper, Russian Irving Berlin or Ukrainian Dimitri Tiomkin worked for the Hollywood industry and shaped the sound of cinema. They blended their expertise in so-called “scholarly music” (which will give rise to the Hollywood Symphonism) with American culture – tinged with jazz – to create a symbiosis between post-romantic European music and music looking to the future. The film music that followed is the fruit of this heritage! In today’s special program, join French violinist Isabelle Durin and French pianist Michaël Ertzscheid who are on tour in the U.S. and present a stunning concert of repertoire from these masters who, in three decades (the 30s-50s), engraved their names in golden letters glorifying a prolific and fertile period, “The Golden Age.” Please see "Tickets & Seating Notes" (below) for details on how to get your free ticket(s). She went on to pursue chamber music studies at the Paris National Conservatory (CNSMDP). Her musical training was complemented by parallel university studies – a Master’s degree (D.E.A.) in philosophy from the Sorbonne – which proved to be a source of personal and intellectual enrichment. Her passion for the symphonic repertoire led her to join the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France. For several years, she served as artistic director of the "Les Harmonies Estivales" festival and the Château de la Motte-Tilly festival. Isabelle Durin has released three albums with pianist Michaël Ertzscheid: Romantisme hébraïque (2008, Jade/Universal), Mémoire et Cinéma (2018, Paraty/Pias), and Un Violon dans l'Histoire (2022, NoMadMusic). These projects have enabled her to connect with audiences through numerous concerts in France and abroad, including in Belgium, England, the Netherlands, Denmark, Romania, Hungary, Lithuania, Israel, the United States, and China. Michaël Ertzscheid (piano) French pianist Michaël Ertzscheid began lessons at the age of eight and pursued studies at the Toulouse Conservatory, under renowned chamber musicians and artists such as Maria Kliegel and Arie Vardi, at the Paris CNR (Regional Conservatory), and at the Boulogne-Billancourt CNR. Along the way, he received several accolades and top honors and won numerous important prizes. He represented the Boulogne-Billancourt CNR in the national regional conservatory competition organized by Yamaha Pianos (2001) and won First Prize: a trip to Japan, which gave him the opportunity to discover Japanese culture and visit the company's piano manufacturing facilities. He obtained his “Certificat d'Aptitude” (teaching qualification) for piano and has taught at various regional conservatories (CNR), including those in Caen, Bordeaux, and Boulogne-Billancourt. He performs regularly in France and abroad, both as a soloist and in chamber music festivals, and has performed with orchestras under the direction of Alain Louvier. Ticket & Seating Notes: HOW TO GET FREE TICKETS: Due to the several guests who reserved free concert tickets and then neither cancelled their ticket(s) nor attended the concerts, we have had to shift to the following process. To ensure that tickets are actually used, guests are required to... • purchase a paid ticket in advance to reserve space(s), and • check in in-person at the event with Gabby, Anissa, or designated JCC staff member. • After the concert, tickets will be refunded via Eventbrite to those who checked in in-person. Called or emailed check-ins are not accepted. Those who do not check in in-person, at the event (as indicated above) will forfeit their ticket(s) for that concert. Unused tickets are non-refundable & non-transferable to other concerts. Important Notes: Thanks to generous donors to the Osher Marin JCC's Adult Programs, tickets for this concert are FREE. • Limit two (2) tickets per person. • Advance registration required. • General seating is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
