Learn about the science behind soil health and how to put that knowledge into practice in land stewardship. Soil Stewardship Saturday, October 3rd 10 AM - 12:30 PM at Alemany Farm Instructor: Vanessa Lieu The health of our soils is critical to maintaining healthy crops and a flourishing ecosystem, both above and underground. Yet the costs can be significant, and barriers to knowledge prevent us from acting with dignity and reverence for the lands we tend. In this workshops, we hope to demystify soil science, discuss the physical, chemical and biological aspects of soil health, and share easy and accessible strategies for gardeners and landworkers to improve soil and plant health! Attending to the soil is foundational to the liberation and sovereignty of all our peoples as we struggle for self-determination and a dignified food system. Together, we can increase autonomy in our care for the soils that we depend on for our livelihoods! Suggested Donation: $35 - no one turned away for lack of funds. Our workshops are donation-based and support the growing and distribution of free produce at Alemany Farm. We encourage everyone to make an offering commensurate with your means, and in an amount that feels powerful to you - such gifts make workshops like these possible. Accessibility Information: This workshop will be held outdoors. The majority will be lecture / discussion / Q&A with some hands on activities. Alemany Farm is not ADA accessible at this time. Pathways are on uneven ground. The bathrooms are accessible only by stairway. We apologize for any inconvenience. INSTRUCTORS: Vanessa Lieu (they/them) is the Farm Manager at Alemany Farm. Vanessa is an earth tender and educator, and is deeply passionate about nurturing networks of relationality with the land and all her beings. They bring with them over 10 years of experience in urban agriculture, public health, healthcare, and community education. As a settler working and living on unceded Ohlone land, they recognize that land and liberation are inseparable, and they are so honored to care for the land and community at Alemany Farm in ways that fortify us to liberate all our peoples and lands from imperial oppression. Yes there is limited parking on the farm (on the gravel drive inside the fence). There is also street parking on Alemany Blvd and Ellsworth streets.
