Over the last 25 years, cosmologists have built a powerful model of the universe’s history, from its first moments 13.8 billion years ago to today. Yet this model tells us that everything we can see—stars, planets, and people—makes up only 5% of the cosmos. The rest is dark matter and dark energy: invisible ingredients that shape galaxies and drive the accelerating expansion of the universe. Prof. Frieman will explain the evidence for dark matter and dark energy and share how researchers are hunting for answers with experiments deep underground, atop remote mountains, and in outer space. He will highlight intriguing new hints about dark energy that have emerged in just the last few years. Prof. Josh Frieman is Professor of Particle Physics and Astrophysics and Associate Laboratory Director at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford University, and former leader of the Dark Energy Survey.
