Elling Eide Center - Mango Preservation Party

Join us for a special mango-centric morning of teamwork, good eats, and mission advancement! Mango Processing and Preservation Party The Eide Center contains a 7-acre arboretum containing many rare and unusal trees planting by Mr. Eide over decades. Among the collection, fruit trees are the most common, and mangoes top the list. This summer, we harvested thousands of pounds of mangoes from dozens of trees, representing many varieties - some currently unknown. During this special volunteer session, staff will remove mangoes from our deep freezer and volunteers will cut and process mangoes so that they can be turned into preserves, ice cream, or dried fruit. These mango treats will be used throughout the year at Eide Center events, connecting our guests to the world that surrounds them and strengthening the connection between the research library and the preserve. Additionally, volunteers will learn how to preserve mangoes through various methods, take home a sample of the products, and may enjoy mangoes or other fruits at the potluck picnic. Schedule 9:00 - 11:30 – Mango-processing plus preservation lesson 11:30 - 12:30 – Potluck picnic Difficulty This activity will be relatively easy, taking place indoors for the majority of the session, and requiring little if any bending and lifting. Manual dexterity is required to cut and handle the mangoes. Do you have certain limitations or concerns you want to share? Inclement Weather If the forecast includes rain, we will send a follow up email with further instructions. Potluck Picnic After working, we will share a potluck picnic. Eide Center staff will bring veggie and beef hotdogs and grill them. Please bring a side dish if you are able (not required). Cut fruit may be served from our tropical fruit orchard. Attire Volunteers are required to wear closed-toe shoes. For most activities, long pants are strongly encouraged. Please bring adequate water, snacks, sunglasses, hats, sunscreen, bug spray, etc, in order to be comfortable. Questions?
