This month, we're starting where Emma does: Volume 1. It's 1883, and twenty-year-old Emma M. Lion has returned to London after years abroad with one very clear intention: to take possession of the house left to her by her great-aunt and finally live independently. There is, naturally, a complication. Her formidable Cousin Archibald has other plans for both Emma and her inheritance, leaving her to establish herself instead in the decidedly eccentric neighborhood of St. Crispian's. Told entirely through Emma's journal entries, The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion: Volume 1 introduces us to a world of mysterious neighbors, unexpected friendships, family schemes, social mishaps, and the small daily dramas that Emma records with wit, curiosity, and a wonderfully distinctive voice. This first meeting is the perfect place to begin. We'll talk about Emma herself, the cast of characters gathering around her, the pleasures of the journal form, the mysteries Brower begins quietly setting in motion, and what makes a fictional world feel like somewhere we want to keep returning to.
