Join Seattle AWIS for an engaging introduction to SoundBio Lab, Seattle’s community biomakerspace, where hands-on biology is made accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. SoundBio Lab provides affordable, practical pathways into bioscience through courses and workshops, shared BSL-1 laboratory access, community research projects, youth research experiences, K–12 outreach, and scholarships and fee waivers. Its welcoming programs serve students building real-world experience, researchers seeking a collaborative environment, innovators and entrepreneurs, educators, and community members who are simply curious about science. Schedule (Wednesday, September 16, 2026) 6:00 PM – 6:30 PM PDT: In-person check-in, networking, snacks and refreshments (in-person only) 6:30 PM – 6:35 PM PDT: Welcome, introductions, and chapter announcements (Zoom stream opens) 6:35 PM – 7:25 PM PDT: Presentation by SoundBio Lab followed by audience Q&A 7:25 PM – 8:00 PM PDT: Wrap-up and informal discussion Speakers Anna TonkonoguiBoard Director, SoundBio Lab Anna will provide a 5–10 minute introduction to SoundBio Lab, its mission, and its programming. Nick KaplanVolunteer Instructor, SoundBio Lab Nick will provide a 5–10 minute overview of SoundBio’s hands-on classes and learning opportunities. Jacob BankeStudent Fellow, Biosensors Project Jacob will lead a 25-minute hands-on presentation on SoundBio’s Living Biosensors Community Project. This project explores the use of bioluminescent organisms to help develop a cost-effective, easy-to-use soil-testing kit.
