Opening at Square One Gallery Saturday, October 23rd from 6-9pm. Join us for an evening with the artists, complimentary cocktails, and refreshments. Jonathan Todryk: Alive Today Square One Gallery is pleased to present “Alive Today,” Jonathan Todryk’s debut solo exhibition with the gallery. Across expansive, softly washed fields of color, Todryk layers wandering lines, abbreviated shapes, rubbed passages, and marks that recede into the surface. Some gather into loose constellations, while others stretch, circle, and dissolve across the canvas. Each painting preserves the shifting movement of attention, allowing touch, pause, revision, and erasure to remain visible within the finished work. Todryk’s process is grounded in a willingness to relinquish control, allowing the hand and materials to behave unpredictably while remaining attentive to what emerges. Raw pigment, oil, and the physical surface of the canvas become active participants as marks are made, veiled, softened, and revealed. Rather than fixing experience into a single image or narrative, the paintings unfold gradually, drawing attention to the weight of a nearly erased line, the movement of a partial gesture, and the life held within an unfinished thought. Material Instinct: A Group Exhibition Square One Gallery is pleased to present “Material Instinct,” a group exhibition featuring Dylan Martinez, Carrie Gillen, Eric Moore, Hayley Sheldon, Cameron Richter, and Alexandra Squire. Bringing together painting, sculpture, glass, textiles, carved surfaces, woven elements, and light, the exhibition considers what happens when an artist’s ideas encounter the physical behavior of a material. Glass refracts and distorts, fabric stretches and gathers, woven surfaces filter light, and carved forms build depth through repetition. Throughout the exhibition, weight, tension, transparency, texture, and resistance actively shape how each work develops. Here, instinct is not the opposite of intention, but the fluency that comes from sustained familiarity with a medium: knowing when to direct it, when to respond, and when to allow its natural properties to lead. Together, the works reveal six distinct ways of thinking through making, each arriving at something that could not have been fully determined in advance.
