Fall Bird Walk -October 3, 8:30am-10:00am

Catch the fall migration! Join local bird guide Nadav Snir Zelniker for a morning of birdwatching at Untermyer Gardens This 90-minute bird walk begins at 8:30 am before the garden is open to the public, when the birds are likely to be very active. Untermyer Gardens' mix of woodlands, meadows, and forest edge makes it a superb location to observe migrating birds. On this walk we will look for fall migrants such as warblers, vireos and flycatchers who make stops along the Hudson River to stock up on food (mainly insects) before continuing on their long journey south. We will also keep our eyes high for raptors as early-October is also the peak of hawk migration. Peregrine falcons, Coopers & Sharp Shinned hawks, vultures and red tail hawks are moving in large/small groups on their way to South America. And as is the case with any bird walk - you just never know what you’ll find… so let’s have fun! This walk is appropriate for beginners and experienced birdwatchers. About your guide: Nadav Snir Zelniker became an avid birder in the last several years. An active member of Saw Mill River Audubon, Bedford Audubon and Greenwich Audubon, Nadav has been a familiar face in the local birding community both as a participant and a bird walks leader. In addition, since 2022, Nadav has been a volunteer counter at the fall hawk-watch seasons at Quaker Ridge, Chestnut Ridge and Hook Mountain. In his professional life Nadav is a full-time drummer/musician. Bring your own binoculars (8 x 42 are the best for birding but others can work). We may have a few binoculars to share. Dress appropriately for the weather. We will be walking on uneven ground, flights of stairs, grass, gravel, and woodchip paths, so WEAR STURDY SHOES. Consider wearing a hat and sunscreen and bringing water with you.
