In 1941, a Polish woman gets a visa from a Japanese diplomat allowing her to escape Nazis. She makes it to Japan, haunted by a water spirit. Oh, I Remember the Black Birch is a new play written by Velina Hasu Houston and directed by Kalina Ko. In autumn 1941, Brina Berman, an 18-year-old Jewish woman from Warsaw, Poland, gains a transit visa from a Lithuania-posted Japanese diplomat that allows her to escape the Nazis after they murder her family. Brina finds herself in Kobe, Japan, a country in alliance with Germany. Haunted by a maternal water spirit, she strives to find a way forward in a world rife with chaos. The story is drawn from true events.
