Wakeupworld Salon: A Lexicon of Black Living

Organized in the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance's famed salons that brought together communities of artists and intellectuals IN PERSON Organized in the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance's famed salons that brought together communities of artists and intellectuals to foster creativity and knowledge sharing, join us for Wakeupworld Salon: A Lexicon of Black Living. Contributors to the publication Thinking from Black: A Lexicon, an expansive lexicon of words, terms, concepts, and ideas that takes the multiplicity of Black life as their point of departure, will use the Schomburg’s current exhibition, To Uncover and Reveal to the World: Arturo Schomburg's Library, to activate a selection of keywords that engage both the exhibition and Schomburg’s ethics of caring for and preserving Black life. We will keep the galleries open until 8pm, inviting you to tour the exhibition, discuss Black life through the words and contributors to Intimacy - Grace Ngugi, Literature - Deborah McDowell, Seen - Ronald Cummings, Solidarity - Hazel Carby, Seeing - Rachel Eliza Griffiths and more! The contributors are visual artists, poets, dancers, historians, writers, architects, painters, theorists, activists, anthropologists, filmmakers, educators, and musicians. Each has engaged with the idea of a lexicon of Black living and taken up the invitation to think from Black in relation to their own medium. Small bites and beverages will be available. The evening is dedicated to Schomburg's enduring role as a research center and a convening space for intergenerational conversations, world-building, and creativity. This is the fifth installment of our Wakeupworld Salon series. *The salon takes its name--Wakeupworld--from Countee Cullen's mythical creature in his poem The Wakeupworld.
