This immersive multimedia performance explores questions of family and identity, offering listeners a soundspace to meditate on the dreams they carry and pass on. it feels like a dream includes works by Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR), Angélica Negrón, Pauchi Sasaki, and Sophia Jani for piano, pre-recorded voices, and electronics, written for and performed by Kim. The evening also features a prologue: the world premiere of The Dreamers, a new work by Corey Chang commissioned by the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art and written for Kim. The work incorporates a poem titled The Dreamers that Kim’s father wrote more than 30 years ago, shortly after immigrating to the U.S. from Korea– a meditation on the duality of hope and despondency experienced by immigrants navigating a new land.
