Mahjong 2.0: Strategy & Scoring in Hong Kong/ Traditional Style Mahjong

This event helps you go beyond chicken hand. Master scoring, strategy, and higher-value hands in HK-style play: OVERVIEW You've learned how to build a winning hand. Now it's time to learn how to win well. Mahjong 2.0 is designed for players who already know how to complete a basic "chicken hand" (雞糊) and are ready to take the next step in Hong Kong style mahjong. Hosted by Mahjong United, at the Chinese American Museum DC. In this session, we move beyond simply finishing a hand and focus on: • What makes a hand point-worthy • Where bonus points come from • How to intentionally build higher-value hands • When to pivot — and when to hold back Because in mahjong (and in life), just because you can doesn't mean you should. We'll dive into real game strategy — reading the table, protecting your hand, making smarter discards, and playing with intention. This is where the game becomes layered, thoughtful, and truly addictive. If someone taught you the basics — four sets of three plus a pair — but you're not sure how to score or how to approach the game strategically, this class is for you. If Friday nights got you hooked, this is where the game opens up. Come ready to see the game in a new way. Light refreshments and tea will be served. WHAT TO EXPECT • A hands-on workshop, not a game night — we play, we pause mid-hand, we talk through the decision, we keep playing • A small group, with room for your specific questions • Hong Kong style (traditional) mahjong • Reference sheets to take home • Light refreshments and tea • Nothing to bring — tiles and tables are provided Brand new to mahjong? This isn't the place to start. Grab the Crash Course for Beginners ticket at a Friday Night Mahjong Club first — you'll learn the tiles, the wall, and how a hand comes together. Once you can finish a hand on your own, come back for this.
