This in-person one day symposium is hosted by the University of the District of Columbia Masters in Social Work program, the Association of Black Social Workers Metropolitain Washington, DC sponsored by ABSW-Metro DC and We The People Community Health Worker Coalition and BOCA Pharmacies at Damien Ministries. Join social workers and other behavioral health and wellness practitioners to share ideas, build networks focused on empowering Black families. Date: Friday, October 9, 2026 Audience: Social workers, behavioral health professionals, educators, community leaders, students, policymakers, and practitioners serving Black families and urban communities Conference Purpose The symposium will bring together social workers and behavioral health experts to examine emerging challenges, promising practices, ethical responsibilities, and community-driven approaches to strengthening Black families and urban communities. Participant Goals: • Increase participants’ knowledge of culturally responsive and evidence-informed practices. • Examine the impact of public policy, environmental conditions, violence, trauma, and substance use on Black families. • Strengthen collaboration among social workers, behavioral health providers, community organizations, policymakers, and educators. • Provide practical strategies that participants can apply within urban practice settings. • Reinforce ethical decision-making, cultural humility, advocacy, and professional accountability.
