One of the most violent, horrific, and important events in the history of the American South: Join us on an educational tour of Wilmington In December of 1898, the only successful coup de'tat in American history was launched. The last biracial government in the South was overthrown by an armed insurrection, followed by a horrific deluge of violence and murder. Wilmington, a city once known as a peaceful and forward-thinking community, was subjugated by white supremacist terror. The Coup of 1898 was a long-buried part of North Carolina history that is re-emerging in public consciousness, but few are aware of the details. This tour seeks to educate the public with a detailed, thorough, and candid exploration of the events, trends, and people involved. Hear the stories of a newsman who narrowly avoided his own horrific murder, the professional instigator who riled up prejudice, the black residents of Wilmington who valiantly protected their homes and families, the economic underpinnings behind the assault, and so much more.
