To participate in the contest, costumes must be a horror or yōkai-inspired version of an existing anime, manga, video game, or pop-culture character. Think cursed variants, undead transformations, ghostly versions, monstrous redesigns, body horror, oni, spirits, demons, urban legends, and other nightmare-fueled takes. Regular cosplay is absolutely welcome at the event — the horror/yōkai requirement only applies to contest entries.
