Blue Notes on Black Friday: Swing Mezzo Closing Reception

Sometimes remembering should feel like a party. Join us for Black Friday: On Doris Rheubottom & Swing Mezzo, a closing reception celebrating the life, artistry, and archival recovery of Philadelphia Swing-era vocalist Doris Rheubottom - and the many Black women artists whose brilliance deserves to remain in cultural memory. Throughout Swing Mezzo, archival research, poetry, music, visual art, and performance have asked what it means to recover a life whose evidence survives only in fragments. This final gathering turns that question toward celebration. Come eat, dance, listen to a DJ, spend time with the visual and archival materials of Swing Mezzo, and join an informal conversation about Doris Rheubottom, Black women in jazz, Philadelphia music history, archival erasure, memory work, and the creative possibilities of bringing history back into motion.
