Douglas Common Preservation Society 3rd Annual Scarecrow Contest

Join us in person for the 3rd Annual Scarecrow Contest and show off your crafty, spooky designs! Get ready to show off your creativity at our 3rd Annual Scarecrow Contest from October 10th - November 1st. Bring your best ideas to life and join us in person for fun-filled days of crafting and friendly competition. Whether you go spooky, silly, or super original, this is your chance to shine. Grab your materials, rally your friends, and let’s make some amazing scarecrows together! ENTRY: Entry is free, but preregistration is required to reserve an assigned spot for your scarecrow. The deadline to register is Wednesday, September 30th. Click 'Check Availability' to register and choose a set up time. YOU ONLY NEED TO SELECT 1 TICKET, EVEN IF THERE ARE MULTIPLE PEOPLE MAKING YOUR SCARECROW. PREREGISTRATION & SET UP DATES: To avoid parking congestion next to the Common, set up times are on Saturday morning, October 10th, every half hour starting at 9:00 am with the last one at 12:30 pm. On Sunday afternoon, October 11th, they are every half hour starting at 1 pm with the last one at 2:30pm. Sign up times are available on a first come, first served basis. PARKING - When you arrive, please park on the road (Common Street) along the curb side of the Common only OR in the 1st Congregational Church parking lot. No parking is allowed on the church side of Common Street under any circumstances per order of the Douglas Police Department. DESIGN CRITERIA: All scarecrows must be your original creation -- no store bought scarecrows will be included in the contest. Since it is VERY windy at the Common, you must have a stake(s) to secure the scarecrow to the ground. A label to identify the scarecrow must be part of its design--include your assigned scarecrow number, and the scarecrow’s name/title (which cannot include the name of your family or business) Please keep all scarecrow displays family-friendly and please avoid political signs, slogans, or messaging. Please let us know if you require a large set up (over 5 x 5 sq ft) so that we can plan placement accordingly. DISPLAY PERIOD: Scarecrows will be on display through the weekend of November 1st. “Touch-ups“ are allowed during this period. Please remove your scarecrow, and anything with your exhibit between November 2nd and November 8th. All displays must be completely removed by the end of the day on Sunday, November 8th. VOTING: The scarecrows will be judged by an unbiased panel of respected community members. Judging considerations will include: • Is it handmade? • Originality of design/theme • Creativity of design • Made of creative materials • Attention to detail • Artistry • Quality of workmanship • Causes and emotional response - laughter, smile, happiness, wonderment, fear, nostalgia. • Does it stand out from the others - is it more memorable? • Additional props such as lights for night appeal, music or sound effects AWARDS CEREMONY: Awards will be presented on Saturday, October 31st, at 1 pm on the Common. All are invited to attend, but you do not need to be present to claim your prize -- if not present, you will be contacted. PRIZES: Prizes will be awarded to the three scarecrows receiving the highest number of votes for “Favorite Scarecrow” -- $250 Amazon Gift Card for 1st place; $150 Amazon Gift Card for 2nd Place; $100 Amazon Gift Card for 3rd place.
