How to Use AI to Learn a New Data Domain Faster You’ve probably been here You’re asked to build an “active customer” report. You make a reasonable assumption: acct_stat = 'ACTV' must mean active. The query runs. The dashboard looks right. Three weeks later, Finance asks why your numbers don’t match theirs. Your SQL was fine. The problem was the business definition you assumed before you started building. What this workshop is about In an unfamiliar business domain, AI can help you make sense of scattered documentation, decode business terminology, and identify what you still need to learn. But how do you know when its answers are reliable enough to use? In this 90-minute practical workshop, you’ll work through a realistic Data project scenario and learn a repeatable four-step approach to domain discovery: • Map the business process to understand how the business works. • Build a Business Glossary using available documentation and AI assistance. • Cross-check business definitions against the Data Dictionary, database structure, and existing measurement logic. • Turn contradictions and gaps into questions for business analysts, subject-matter experts, and source-system owners. The goal is to use AI to learn faster, challenge assumptions, and know what to verify before implementing business logic. AI drafts. You verify. What you’ll do • Follow a realistic Data project, from a one-line brief to preparing for your first conversation with the business. • Use AI to draft a Business Glossary and flag ambiguous or conflicting definitions. • Compare business terms against database tables, columns, and existing reports. • Investigate common sources of misleading metrics, including status versus actual activity, different time windows, and system-generated transactions. • Complete a short individual exercise using a synthetic data structure, then compare your findings with other participants. • Practice deciding which AI-generated answers you can use as a starting point and which require further verification. What you’ll take away • A one-page domain discovery template to structure your understanding of an unfamiliar business. • A two-hour project preparation checklist to help you get ready for a new Data assignment, client discussion, or job interview. • A reusable AI prompt kit for drafting a Business Glossary in your preferred AI chatbot.
