Silver Wave: A Collective Walking Performance in Cape Town

Step inside a large silver fabric and become part of a collective performance shaped by movement, attention and the landscape around us. We’ll meet in the late afternoon and spend the last hours of daylight walking, playing and experimenting together beneath the Silver Wave, and then stay for a shared sunset picnic. Together, we will move through a series of simple instructions exploring our attention, movement, our relationship to one another, and the landscape around us. At times you may move alone. At other moments, you may find yourself responding to another person, to the whole group, to the wind, a sound, or the movement of the fabric itself. You don't need any performance or movement experience. There is nothing to act, rehearse and no “right” way to participate. Come alone or bring someone you'd like to share an unusual experience with. Registration required. PLEASE NOTE: exact location will be communciated later to all registered participants. The performance involves walking and light movement outdoors on sand and natural terrain. Wind, changing light, sand, sound and weather influence what happens. No previous performance experience is required. The experience is open to everyone who wants to meet curious, thoughtful, open-minded people in an extraordinary setting. You do not need to be an artist. No prior experience in performance, theatre or dance is needed. There are no spectators - everyone participates! The setting is flexible: you remain in control of your level of participation and may step out from the performance at any time. You'll enjoy it if you: • appreciate art, nature and collective experiences; • long for something real and embodied; • value meaningful connections; • enjoy stepping slightly outside your comfort zone in a supportive setting; About Silver Wave Silver Wave is a participatory performance project by artist Genia Taratynova, exploring collective movement, attention, landscapes and the temporary communities that can emerge between people who may not know one another. The project was originally created with the support of Insight Collective for AfrikaBurn 2025 and has since been performed in different landscapes, including Portugal and the North Sea coast in the Netherlands. Each iteration is different because the people, landscape and conditions become part of the work. Silver Wave is inspired by Lygia Pape's historical performance Divisor (1968).
